Days of Earth and Sky – Bathurst Retrospective

In a few days I will move from this place … the place where fog is born, and where the icy dawn has been my companion for many days. I truly embraced the winter cold waiting for sunrise, and the lonely silence of the night sky waiting for Scorpius and Orion. The memory of frozen hands will now travel with me to warmer climes in Jervis Bay on the South Coast of NSW where another life chapter will begin.

The natural landscape enfolds Bathurst on all sides – rolling hills and the Macquarie River meandering through its fertile valley. Where I have lived high on the edge of town for this past decade, the predominant feature has been the weather … I’ve had plenty of warning of approaching storms, and often – time to quickly assemble camera and tripod in the hills or over the back fence.

My passion for dawn and dusk and the milky way as it arches across the landscape is apparent for anyone who looks at my website, and if you’ve followed me for awhile you will have seen some or all of these images … but they represent the photographic legacy I take with me of my time here in this special place.

  1. I can’t even find enough words and adjectives to describe your work. Amazing, stunning, picturesque, breathtaking, mindblowing… And I’ll force myself to stop there. Thanks so much for sharing !

  2. Wes, the scenes are extraordinary for their sense of place. I so admire the way you capture ‘essence’, the raw moods of a natural environment? And not least your technique with time lapse and astrophotography in capturing the realm of the dawn and dusk skies. So few of us locked away in our urban routine get to marvel at the beauty of the night skies. Your Flickr collection is magnificent. I had a look to see if you have published on eBooks. – beaches and Paris. Do you have plans to publish a Bathurst Retrospective?

    1. Thank you Liz. And I appreciate your feedback. Yes, I do plan to do an eBook on the Bathurst/Central West years … It’s sitting about 5 on my list as I still have to finish books from the Canadian Rockies/Alaskan Passage, Hawaii/South Pacific, Prague and Budapest to Amsterdam trips. Once this move is done I plan to get into it – life is busy when you retire !!!

  3. You have certainly got quite a portfolio of amazing ‘weather’ shots…. I hope you are equally inspired in your new home. Hope the move goes well 🙂
