In the glow of Alnitak

Alnilam and Alnitak are the bright bluish stars from west to east (left to right) along the diagonal in this image. These blue supergiant stars form part of the Belt of Orion, the third member being Mintaka (out of image to the west). Each are hotter and much more massive than the Sun.

They lie about 1,500 light-years away, born of Orion's interstellar clouds. The dark Horsehead Nebula is in the centre right and the Flame Nebula near Alnitak is at lower right.
